The paper we run
Ten tasks, 50 questions, 30 minutes. That is about 36 seconds a question, and the pace is most of the difficulty — which is why the clock is the published one and not a generous approximation.
This is the section ETS has set since 21 January 2026. The nine question types the old paper was known for — Insert Text, Prose Summary and the rest — are not in it, and a tool still drilling them is drilling a paper nobody sits.
All three reading task types
- Complete the Words — three academic paragraphs, ten half-erased words in each. Thirty of the section's fifty items.
- Read in Daily Life — five short texts, an email, a notice, a schedule, with two questions each.
- Read an Academic Passage — two passages of about two hundred words, five questions each.
The one that decides the section
Complete the Words is thirty of the fifty items — more than the other two put together, and the part almost no practice material has caught up with. You are shown something like grad____ inside a paragraph and you type the rest.
The blanks are cut from the paragraph, not invented beside it. The generator finds each answer in the text it just wrote and erases the back half of it. A word you are asked to complete is therefore always a word that is really there — a blank whose answer is not in the passage is unanswerable by reading, and it looks exactly like a hard question.
Adaptive on the day, a fixed form here
Reading is a two-stage adaptive section: how you do in the first stage decides whether the second is harder or easier. Practice here is a fixed form at the published length and pace, and the screen says so before you start. A rehearsal cannot route you the way the real section does; claiming it could would be the more comfortable lie.

Every passage and question is written for this product, and you never meet the same one twice. Nothing is reproduced from a published book — which means no copyright is borrowed, and no answer key is published for the paper you are about to sit.

How many questions are in TOEFL Reading?
Fifty, in 30 minutes — about 36 seconds a question. Thirty of the fifty are Complete the Words, ten come from five short daily-life texts and ten from two academic passages. That pace is a large part of the difficulty, which is why the clock here is the published one rather than a generous approximation.

What is TOEFL Complete the Words?
A short academic paragraph with ten words half rubbed out — you type the letters that are missing. It is thirty of the section's fifty items, so it is the largest single thing in TOEFL Reading and the part most practice material has not caught up with. Our generator makes the blanks from the paragraph itself, so a word you are asked to complete is always a word that is really in the text.
Is TOEFL Reading adaptive?

Is this the current TOEFL Reading format?
Yes. ETS redesigned the TOEFL iBT on 21 January 2026 and this is the redesigned Reading section: fifty items in 30 minutes across the three task types above, reported as a 1 to 6 band rather than a score out of 30. ETS also reports a comparable 0 to 120 total until January 2028.
